Well... We have finally got internet so I can tell you all about our 3 full days of driving across the country. We left on wednesday Aug. 17th in hopes that we could make it all the way to Philadelphia by Saturday the 20th. We were driving a 16' Penske truck while towing our car behind it. There was a warning on the car carrier saying the max speed was 55mph. I was so scared we would have to drive so slow and take a week to make our trip. But Keven was able to usually go 65-75 mph. I kept a log along the way so I could report what we thought of each state, and anything exciting that we saw or did.
Our first state to travel through was Wyoming. Our first thoughts were "There is nothing here!" There was only sagebrush... not even a tree for miles. It was actually exciting when we got to see a tree. There was a little flag on the top of a little hill. Sagebrush and rocks... is all we saw for a really long time. At one point Keven said "Wow that is a big "plant"." so I am looking all around for any type of vegetation... only to find a large factory in the middle of nowhere. Keven hated the roads in WY, they were bumby and all uphill.
Nebraska was a sight to see! So much prettier than Wyoming. There were rolling plains of grass, big rolling hills. We drove through a mini tornado, which scared us. Keven was not sure how to drive through it, but we made it. We were glad to not see anything bigger than the mini one. There were actual trees in Nebraska. Along side I-80 there were swimming holes, which we saw kids swinging from ropes. It looked way fun. There was a lot of corn and farmland, but it was pretty. We got to witness a beautiful sunset and sunrise in Nebraska as we stayed in a tiny motel room. We were suprised to make it clear to Lincoln, Nebraska in just one day of driving... a total of 14 hours!
The next day brought us to see three more states, starting with Iowa. We saw... more corn! It was still pretty, but farms everywhere and tons and tons of corn. We did get to see a lot of rivers and some cool bridges.
Illinois had even more trees especially by the rivers. The mississippi was neat to see, and tons of green around it. The one down fall about this state was they had really crappy roads. Construction everywhere! You think Utah is bad... nope Illinois beat UDOT!
Indiana started our adventure with Toll Roads, which we have decided are the dumbest thing anyone has ever thought of. It is crazy to have to pay a ton of money just to drive on a road! We were so confused on how they worked. We kept thinking... All of this schooling and we were never taught anything about toll roads. We really needed a lesson on how they worked, so we asked people until we kind of understood how it worked. Not sure we completely understand, but we made it. Indiana was a really pretty state though. Tons of trees, very tall, and very green. There were a lot of small farms, and a bunch of rivers, which were one of my favorite things to see.
We stayed near the Ohio border for our second night stay, after 12 hours of driving. Our hotel was really nice! We got to see a firefly as well as got to see a sunrise with fog.
Ohio... my first thought was... "It looks like Smallville" There were less tress than Indiana, but still pretty. Lots of farmland. The toll road was a more reasonable price, which was nice. And all the service stations were the nicest we had seen our entire drive.
After Ohio came the state we were most excited to see... Pennsylvania!!! and wow we loved seeing this state! It was by far the prettiest state that we had seen. Large hills with tons of trees! Everything was so green. We would go over these bridges where all you could see was a valley of green trees and sometimes beautiful river. In the big trees though were BIG spider webs... which made me wonder on the size of the spiders here.... (so far I have only seen 2 regular sized spiders in our apartment... which better be all of them.)Along the way it started raining really hard, nothing that would scare us... but everyone else on the road was pulling over or turing on their flashers. We thought it was the weirdest thing. We saw a road called "Freeman Falls Rd" and thought it was just meant to be! lol Even when we got out of the country and into cities, everyting was still beautiful. We are excited to live in such beauty!
pictures will not upload at this time... how rude!... (and coming soon to our blog... pictures of the apartment, and how life is now that we are here!)
Ya! So glad you made it safely.
